GDS of Peugeot 308: Peculiarities of Working and Changing of Solenoid Valve

The gas distribution system of any vehicle is aimed at timely supplying combustible mixture or air with the future outlet of exhaust gas to the engine cylinders. Different operating motes of the engine have certain duration if the valve is open or closed. It allows to change power settings and parameters of the torque in different operating modes of the engine, and also to reduce toxicity of exhaust gas.

Simply said, the main purpose of the gas distribution system of changing the valve timing of Peugeot 308 and 307 is a reverse regulation of exhaust gas and a maximal optimization of the car’s operation in different modes: running at idling speed, with the peak power and with the maximum torque.

General Information on Operation of Phase Shifters

Modern engines from European and Japanese manufacturers, including the engine of Peugeot 307, are equipped with different hydraulic systems that change a cylinder filling level by closing or opening the valve. With adjusting phases of the gas distributor it is possible to change the volume of new charges and remaining exhaust gases.

Based upon speed of the crank and the level of throttle plate operation, the level of combustible mixture moving into the cylinder and the output of exhaust gas can significantly change. By modification of phases of the gas distributor there is an opportunity to make necessary corrections based on crank’s turns and the level of filling cylinders with combustible mixture.

Therefore, it gives an opportunity to achieve the certain positive dynamic in operation of the engine of Peugeot 308 and 307:

  • increase of the power indicator of the engine at the output;
  • improvement in the torque parameter in quite wide range turnovers;
  • reduction in the level of harmful exhaust gas emission;
  • fuel saving;
  • reduction of noise from the operating engine.

In standard engines a hard bond of the crank and the camshaft is used. Classic engines of Peugeot 208 and 307 are equipped with a phase-shifter that lets control the camshaft and crank’s positions for the purpose of phase changing and valve closing. The power of turnovers of the camshaft is controlled by an electric or electrohydraulic mechanism. However, in simple mechanisms it is possible to install the shaft in certain positions. As for more modern phase-shifters, there is a possibility to adjust the camshaft continuously against the crank.

In the classic engine the emission valve can be opened approximately by 10-35 degrees until the piston moves into a topmost dead position. On the contrary, the valve is closed by 40-86 degrees in the moment when the piston moves into a low dead position.

For the purpose of getting the maximum power parameter a certain angular size of opening and, on the contrary, closing inlet valves must be provided. The greatest turns of the engine is accompanied by cylinders filled with inert gas flows in the moment of pistons rising when inlet valves are not closed yet. In turn, at low speed a delay in closing the valve plays an important role as it leads to partial squeezing combustible mixture out of cylinders.

Role of Solenoid Valves in GDS Operation

The engine of Peugeot 308 and 307 has one phase-shifter that is installed in a cogged pulley. Structurally the pulley have two main parts: an impeller equipped with a blade and a cylinder with a chamber. If reaching parameters set by the electrical control system a signal is fed to the solenoid valve. When opened, the valve provides oil supply through the center port of the camshaft under some pressure. Oil is supplied through holes in the central part of the impeller and in the mechanism lifting the piston.

Due to some pressure, under which oil is supplied, the piston moves up and the impeller becomes empty. Then, the impeller and the phase-shifter turn toward a delay in inlet valve operation. After minimizing pressure of the solenoid valve the impeller and the blade return to their initial position. The piston blocks the system operating in mode of minimum lags.

The valve is responsible for providing the phase-shifter with oil supply. After disconnecting a control potential of the electromagnetic unit the phase-shifter transfers the camshaft to mode of minimum lags. It provides a maximum parameter of the torque at low speed.

Phase-shifters of Peugeot 307 and 308 that are mounted on camshafts operate normally only if these rules will be followed:

  • speed of the crankshaft is above 1 500 r.p.m.;
  • a parameter of pressure reached in the inlet valve is above 500 mbar;
  • a temperature level of antifreeze is above 30 degrees.

ECU takes part in changing of phases of the gas distributor: it tracks the crank and the camshaft, temperature indicators of tosol cooling agent and speed of the vehicle. A range of regulating rotation angles and the camshaft at idling speed differs from +5 to -5, but if rotation angles are suddenly increased, it differs from 0 to 30 degrees.

Error Codes and Change of Solenoid Valve

When the engine of Peugeot 308 gains speed, the car starts twitching and the trip computer shows an error message, it is possible that the solenoid valve of Peugeot 308 has crashed. It can be proven by such error codes as P0013 and P0014 received after the engine diagnosis.

Errors received after the diagnosis can mean the following:

  1. The solenoid valve is broken, and because of it oil is not fully supplied to the phase-shifter. Therefore, the exhaust camshaft does not turn to the set angle. In this case, it is necessary to change parts that have failed.
  2. Wheel compactors providing the sealing of oil passages are damaged. To eliminate a breakdown it is necessary to change them.
  3. The sensor wiring controlling the position of the exhaust camshaft is damaged, because of which the electronic control unit receives incorrect data.  To fix it, it is necessary to check the connection of terminal blocks on the sensor.

The change of the solenoid valve of the Peugeot 308 GDS includes the following simple acts:

  1. Detach terminals from the accumulator.
  2. Detach a connector from the solenoid valve.
  3. Unscrew an attachment bolt.
  4. Remove the broken solenoid valve.
  5. Put in a new part and screw the attachment bolt.
  6. Connect all disconnected wires to their positions.

After changing the solenoid valve of Peugeot 308 it is possible to recover the acceleration dynamics, stabilize engine speed, reduce a level of exhaust gas and, of course, eliminate errors from the display of the trip computer.
