The gasoline engine nfu TU5JP4 engine was developed by the specialists of PCA Peugeot Citroën with colleagues from BMW. When the engine was being developed, all requirements established by engine builders, time and international standards of 2006 were met. It became a base gasoline engine for the model range of Citroen and Peugeot cars. Such vehicles, as Citroen C2,C3,C4, Berlingo, Xsara 1587cc, Peugeot 206, 307, Partner were equipped with these engines. And it’s not surprising: it had all features that meet all the requirements of the demanding European car market.

If compared with the previous model, the new engine was drastically changed. The gas distribution mechanism was redeveloped. As is known, any four-stroke engine has a clear algorithm of opening and closing of the fuel supply valve and the exhaust valve. By the way, there is a particular height of the opening. As a consequence, no matter, on which mode a valve works, it is opened at the same height level.


  1. gas distribution mechanism (GDM) with two camshafts and 16 valves, 2 phase shifters are used.
  2. injection system from BOSCH is distributed and multiple-port (during the operation it doesn’t need to be regulated (it is a role of the engine control system);
    self-regulating shaft of GDM (the belt tension controls the dynamic tensioner);
  3. lubricating system is equipped with a lubricant pump with friction gears (oil supply level depends on the temperature);

For the engine working in a right way and extracting all exhaust in a timely manner, a scheme called “crossflow” was developed. It means that fuel is fed from the one side and exhaust is extracted from the opposite side. This system improves the work of the engine and is responsible for its durability. The injection system of the МЕ 7.4 type by BOSCH is responsible for explosion of combustible. It is fully automated, sequential and is operated without interference and changes.

Due to the fact that a cast cylinder barrel and an aluminum cylinder head are included in the construction of the 1.6 VTi  TU5JP4 engine, the developers could achieve the weight of the weight and the size of the engine,  as compared to competitors.
The construction also contains attachments: generator; oil sensor; air conditioner compressor, starter, attachment driving gear; oil sump.

Disadvantages of NFU TU5JP4

You can experience some problems with the engine operation in 2-3 years. It can be some unusual noise and unstable running of the engine. Many owners complain about noisy and unstable engine operation. In some time phases of the gas distribution mechanism may work unsatisfactorily, which provokes an activation of the corresponding signal indicator «CHECK ENGINE» on the dashboard.

If the indicator is activated, the owner must consult the vehicle service center to eliminate faults.  Sometimes the owner can experience failures in the engine work at 4000 rpm. In this case, the indicator even may not be activated. It may be connected with the use of low-quality fuel or with untimely maintenance of the engine. As a rule, such “behavior” of the engine is connected with the injector. To solve this problem, it is enough to pour special liquid for cleaning the injector.

Despite the fact that car makers recommend to experience maintenance every 10 000 km or once a year, specialists recommend to change oil, clean the injector and change all spark plugs every 7 000 km. This is because cars work under our conditions that are more severe, than the European ones, when it comes to engines.

Also, the owner may have problems with ignition coils as they often burn out.


The TU5JP4 engine is proved to be durable and cost-effective. While cars of these models suffer from breakage of the transmission and burning down of electronics, the engine continues working. Interruptions in its work appear only because of low-quality fuel or untimely change of operating fluid.

Manufacturing companies equipping their vehicles with this engine (TU5JP4) and owners of cars with it (TU5JP4) state that if constantly or shifting working, the engine won’t lose its quality and will continue operating for many thousand kilometers.  All the car owner needs is good fuel and regular maintenance that is able to let reveal and eliminate all breakages and defects before they damage the whole system.

  1. this article is usles, TU5jp4 is not variable valve timing engine from PSA and BMW. This engine is a simple DOCH engine. There was a PRINCE engine made with BMW that had a variable valve timing (and it sucked). there also was EW10J4S vvt from PSA.

  3. Has this engine interference of the Pistons with the valves in case of a Timing belt breakage?
    I have one of this engine in my car and the description is really accurate! I have experienced everything mentioned.
